SINGAPORE SAND

The book was made during eight trips to Singapore from 2016-2023. I passed through Singapore for the first time on my way to interviewing my uncle Stan in Australia in 2013. One of the he first things he told me when I interviewed him was that he was captured and placed in a Japanese P.O.W. camp in Changi. I became curious about Singapore and its history enjoying my trips there. Singapore is an island, a capital and a country. Its history is much older than what is generally know about it being a former British colony and goes back to records in the 11th century
The book has been been awarded a "distribution grant" by the Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet) and is now to be found in Sweden's 286 public libraries.

This was the street where I lived when I grew up in London. In 1972-1973 while still living in England. I photographed my family, neighbours and the people on the street. The same photographs were exhibited in October 1972 and October 2022, fifty years later in the very same building. The building located in The Old Town, was once Clapham Public Library and today is Omnibus Theatre.
Stonhouse Street was split in two sections by Lambeth Council's housing project. Our house and that section of the street has long since gone and is unrecognisable.

In the eight years since the book was published awareness of sea level rise in southern Sweden has increased and today there are almost weekly reports about erosion and flooding in Skåne. As recently as January 2024 Knäbäckshusen beach has been closed down indefinitely because of the risk from erosion and falling trees.
